Through the efforts of Melany Wilks, Librarian at Pioneer Memorial Library in Colby, District 7 of Kansas Author’s Club has received a grant from the Kansas Humanities Council to hire one of their trained speaker-instructors for the KAC District 7 Fall meeting. These speakers are winners from the Humanity Council’s Pulitzer Prize Project in Kansas.
District 7 selected Paula Ripple of Dodge City to speak at 2:00 p.m. during their Sept. 9 meeting at the Pioneer Memorial Library in Colby. This portion of their meeting will be open to the public free of charge.
Ripple taught English composition at Dodge City Community College and Dodge City High School and has served as a mentor to new writing teachers. In retirement she continues to explore writing and innovative techniques employed by contemporary writers.
District 7 would also like to invite anyone who might be interested, to attend their business meeting that will start at 11:00 a.m. at the Colby library that morning, Sept 9. After the business meeting Ronda Miller, president of KAC District 2 will be there to talk about her new book. Also, winners of the writing contest District 7 is sponsoring, “Follow the Mysteries of Western Kansas,” will receive their awards and will also have an opportunity to read their entries.
A buffet luncheon will be served at noon there at the library. The price of the buffet will be about $7.00 each. They will need RSVP’s from those who plan to be there for lunch in order to let the server know how many to plan for.
There is still time to enter the writing contest, “Follow the Mysteries of Western Kansas.” It is for individuals 18 and older and they do not need to be members of Kansas Authors Club or of District 7. Submit typed entries of 1,500 words or less by Tuesday, Aug. 15, accompanied by a $2 entry fee for each entry on the theme, “Follow Mysteries of Western Kansas,” in any form. We are using the guidelines for pros listed in the KAC 2017 manual. Mail entries with fee to Sheryl Brenn, 892 Co. Road O, Levant, KS 67743 or to [email protected]. Phone 785-586-2384.
